Taxes are ultimately just an annual chore.More than likely they needed a form not supported by the free version. It's all a means to and end and (shouldn't) make much difference in the end. Sometimes used it free through military sometimes paying when things were more complicated. I've used TurboTax, H&R Block, an accountant, and doing it myself by hand. Both services are user-friendly but TurboTax is slightly simpler with more straightforward language. The two Deluxe options are the same in terms of price, but TurboTax’s Deluxe option supports more forms that self-employed, freelance and contract workers may need.
